A sweet prayer in one my most treasured child prayer books….
“What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a Shepherd, I would give Him a lamb,
If I were a wise man, I would do my part,
But what can I give Him,
Give Him my heart.”
You know those moments where God gives you something–whether it is an incredible blessing, increases your faith, delivers you from sin, comes through for you to show you He is near…whatever it is…those moments where you are so totally humbled and in awe…this prayer comes to mind….there is nothing I can give Him…I offered up to Him the sweet gift He had given Lewis for the baby through a tender woman down the street…but, I am offering Him a gift He has already given us! Truly, there is nothing I can give Him…but my heart. A prayer and earnest seeking to be Holy, to obey His commands, to give Him everything that I have—my emotions, intellect, will, desires, dreams, and resources, to be conformed to His will, reflecting His holy nature, as His child, and using all of it for the good and perfect, sovereign purposes of His Kingdom. This is my desire…and I ask Him for His great help in this difficult endeavor.
The other day, Lewis was in his thoughtful place and looked at me and said “Mommy, Jesus loves us too much.” I said, “what do you mean by that buddy?” He said, “Mommy, Jesus loves us much more than we love Him.” Our hearts both ached…as we both knew it was true. I said, “Yes, buddy, He does…but that makes us want to love Him with all our heart, mind, and soul, doesn’t it? To the best of our ability.” This realization that we can never love Him more than He loves us…is so humbling…but so special…to be LOVED so greatly and perfectly…perfect love casts out all fear…and makes us want to be so much more like Him.
We praise you Lord that what you really want from us is our hearts. May we give you them fully, without any reservation.
